Dogs need to be programmed correctly, much like a TV remote. Your dog is capable of doing what you would like him to do, but you have to train him the right way. Dogs aim to please their human companions, which makes them eager to learn new tasks and tricks.
Put yourself in your dog’s proverbial shoes, or paws, rather. Sometimes, training will get frustrating, but you will need to have patience. Instead of giving up entirely, you might consider trying to put yourself in your dog’s mindset. Try to see the world through their eyes.
Use a controlled and calm behavior when rewarding your dog for good behavior. When the dog correctly follows your commands, you can certainly give a reward. Don’t let your own excitement get your dog excited or they will lose focus. Maintain a calm atmosphere and provide an appropriate reward.
Get your dog into a feeding routine. You can set a firm schedule by teaching the dog to anticipate that the food will be removed within 10 to 15 minutes of the start of mealtime. By doing this, your dog will eventually learn to finish their food in one sitting, making feeding a little easier on you.
Control how much you reward your dog. If you are able to command your dog to do something the right way, then it is good to calmly reward your dog. Don’t get too excited, though, as your excitement may cause them to break their concentration. You should stay calm and then give the reward.
Make sure your dog is up and active often. Almost all dogs have short attention spans. Dogs that are bored are not easy to train. Your dogs will obey more quickly if you keep them well exercised. Walk or run your dog frequently.
Understand that during training, what your dog eats will go out of their system. In order to regulate your dog’s toileting habits, you should feed him a good quality food at the same times each day. This will get your dog into a solid routine for bathroom breaks.
Early on, always have a tasty treat on hand to immediately reward your dog for responding to a command. After all, the point of rewarding him is to show him that he is following good behavior. This is a good way to make your dog know the difference between a good and bad thing.
Ensure you get your dog’s attention using the same methods. First, say his name, then the command. Use your dog’s name to get his or her attention. Once you do this, tell your dog your command. Dogs tend to respond by name right away and they know that you want their attention.
“No” shouldn’t be a huge part of training. It is important to be positive when you are training your dog. Saying the word “no” will not aid in the training of your dog. Each dog is unique and has unique requirements. Training should be geared towards their needs and personality.
Your dog must realize that you are the leader of the pack. Your dog must understand that you’re in control, so that he knows to obey and respect you. It is important to walk ahead of your dog when taking him for a walk. This will let him know that you are the leader.
The best way to train your dog is to use different tones of voices. Your dog should be able to distinguish between varying tones you use for praise, commands and corrections. Always be firm when issuing a command. Corrections should be even sharper. Praise should be offered in your natural tone.
Let your dog socialize, which can really help to develop their skills. He needs to learn how to behave around both humans and other dogs. This is best taught early. This also helps to avoid hyper-activity in a new location.
Your training will mold and shape your dog, so take the responsibility seriously. This is something you need to know since you might undo desired behaviors with horse-playing or teasing them. Be sure that every action you take supports the behaviors you seek.
It is a simple task to teach a dog how to roll over, just be sure to keep some dog treats handy! First, have your pet to lay down. Then hold the treat at the side of the dog’s head and move it around it’s face to the other side. As the dog uses his nose to track the morsel, he will simultaneously roll his entire body over. Whenever you dog does roll over, actually say the words, “roll over.” Continue to do this until your dog actually rolls over whenever you say the words without using the treat. Do not get mad if it takes several tries. Once they learn this particular trick, they will be popular at the dog park!
It is possible to teach your pup to wait to eliminate, if you are consistent in your training. Take him outside hourly to do his business. When he does his toilet outside, remember to praise him. Never yell at your dog for relieving itself in the house. He does not know better, and shouting at him will only make things worse. Once your dog drinks or eats, take him out 15 minutes after finishing. Also, be sure to take him outside after he has exited his crate.
Dogs need an outlet to work out their behavior. Dogs need a healthy diet too, along with a place to get exercise and lots of stimulation.
Try using special or unique treats during training to make your dog more interested. Your dog will soon come to realize that training treats will not be run-of-the-mill fare, but special treats he will want to work hard to earn.
Let any dog you approach sniff your hand first so he can smell you. Extending your hand lets the animal familiarize himself with your unique scent, making him more receptive to a friendly interaction. Once the dog recognizes your scent, he will not be afraid of you and will be more likely to follow your commands.
Do not allow your pet to drag you. You should always be leading the way, not vice-versa. Use a good training collar and a short leash to begin obedience training, and make sure to keep your dog at heel and to pass through doors and gates ahead of your dog. The dog should always remember that you’re the captain!
Use the ‘shake-can’ method of training. Seal up a can with some coins inside. If your dog performs an unwanted behavior, shake the can. This will give your dog a start and stop the bad behavior. After using this method several times, your pet will begin to realize you find his behavior unacceptable. Do not shake the can too much, as this will teach your dog to zone out the sound.
Don’t shout at dogs that bark. When you shout back at your dog, he will interpret this as you reacting and acknowledging the barking. This feedback makes the dog know that they are not supposed to be barking at what it is they are barking at.
The most successful training program is lifelong. Dogs do not cease learning after puppyhood. If you provide positive reinforcement for desirable behaviors, your dog will continue to be obedient, and when you provide your dog with consistent discipline, negative behaviors are less likely to occur.
Occasionally, behavior problems can occur suddenly and warrant a visit to a vet to clarify any health issues that may have arisen. Certain health conditions, or even pain, can completely change an animal’s demeanor. It could even be to the point that the dog may become more aggressive and lash out at people. Remember that your dog cannot express clearly what the problem is: you will have to pay attention to your pet.
If you know how to get through to your pet, it is easy to teach them more things down the line. Your dog will take pleasure in learning commands and will love to see you happy when he does something right.
